Jiaming Mei
Jiaming Mei is a freelance photojournalist from Shanghai, China, currently based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She holds a bachelor's degree in International Affairs from George Washington University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in New Media Photojournalism. With a global perspective, Jiaming captures stories that delve into the complexities of identity, culture, and social issues.
In 2018, Jiaming volunteered for three months in a remote village in China, where she documented the lives of “left-behind children” — those separated from their parents due to economic migration. This experience ignited her commitment to telling authentic human stories, a commitment that continues to drive her work on topics such as immigration, religion, and Asian American narratives.
Jiaming’s work has been featured in exhibitions, including the AAPI Voices Visual Arts event, and published across various media outlets. Her approach to storytelling is both visual and poetic, as she explores themes of memory, culture, and community. When not behind the camera, Jiaming enjoys baking, boxing, and hiking with her dog.
